NGC 281 is a bright emission nebula associated with open cluster IC 1590. These objects are located 9,600 light-years away from Earth inside the spiral arms of our Galaxy. They are a group of new-born stars having an age of only 3,5 million years.

The bright star ar right is Schedar (Alpha Cassiopeiae), a red giant star with an intrinsic luminosity 800 times greater than that of the Sun.
